The European Union's food safety authority has called into question the safety of cloned animal products.
The chair of EFSA's scientific committee, Vittorio Silano, told reporters that more data needed to be gathered to make an informed decision on the procedure's safety. The comments come after EFSA appeared to back cloning, in its first response to the issue in January, when it said cloned animals could be safe to eat. The European Union's executive has said that it will carry out a survey in September on consumer attitudes to cloned meat. The largest US dairy producer and distributor, Dean Foods, said last month that it would not sell milk from cloned animals due to consumer concerns.
