The Italian government says it is extending its state of emergency over illegal immigration to cover the whole country.
The ruling gives Italian authorities additional powers to control immigration, which has almost doubled over last year's figures. More than 10,600 illegal immigrants have arrived by boat so far this year. The EU has criticised as discriminatory the new legal powers introduced by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's conservative government, which include the large-scale fingerprinting of Roma.
