German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is in Afghanistan on a four-day visit to check on the progress of German development and security efforts in the country.
On the first day of his unannounced visit, Steinmeier travelled to the western town of Herat, where Berlin has contributed to restoring the old town and the city's drinking-water facilities. Germany has promised 1.1 billion euros in aid from now to 2010 for reconstruction and development in Afghanistan.
