Rival Greek and Turkish leaders of the divided island of Cyprus have agreed to launch reunification negotiations.
Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias and his Turkish Cypriot counterpart Mehmet Ali Talat are scheduled to start the talks on September 3. The head of the UN mission on Cyprus said any agreed solution would be voted on by the public separately and simultaneously in both communities. The Mediterranean Island has been split since 1974, when Turkey invaded in response to a pro-Greek coup. Turkey's unwillingness to recognise Greek Cyprus has been an obstacle in its bid to join the European Union.
