In the French city of Bordeaux, the European Union and South Africa have held their first ever summit.
Speaking at the event, French President Nicolas Sarkozy pledged continued EU support for the mediation effort of South African President Thabo Mbeki in the Zimbabwe crisis, while at the same time urging swift progress in negotiations between Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai. Other topics included immigration, trade and climate change. The summit coincides with a US move to step up sanctions against Zimbabwe in response to President Mugabe's repression.
