He is scheduled to meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai to discuss security and other issues. The foreign minister's visit is aimed at reviewing progress in German development and security efforts in the war-torn country. On Friday, Steinmeier visited the western city of Herat, where Berlin has contributed to restoring the old town and the city's drinking water facilities. Germany, which has a total of 3,500 soldiers in addition to a 200-strong special task force stationed in the country, has pledged 1.1 billion euros in aid up to 2010 for reconstruction and development programmes.
