Authorities said the measure was taken as a precaution and that it affected hotels near the southeast coast of the island, which is popular with European vacationers. Meanwhile, firefighters are trying to push back the blaze that has devastated the island's pine forests. A fire department official said more than 500 firefighters, 100 soldiers and several aircraft, including four waterbombers from Italy and France, were deployed. Last year, over 70 people were killed during forest fires which destroyed some 270,000 hectares of forest and agricultural land in southern Greece.
