Four people have died and three have been injured in a crash on the main road from Perth to Inverness.
It is understood that two vehicles were involved in a collision on the A9 at The Slochd, north of Aviemore.
Both vehicles burst into flames.
Emergency services were called to the crash at about 1515 BST.
Northern Constabulary said a woman died in a separate single-vehicle crash on the B9163 between Cononbridge and Culbokie on the Black Isle at 1600 BST.
The A9 crash occurred on a stretch of single carriageway close to the Slochd summit.
Two people were taken to hospital by road and one by air ambulance.
The road is closed and diversions are in place.
Drivers were advised to avoid the area if at all possible as long tailbacks were reported.
Parts of the A9 have a reputation as being amongst the most dangerous stretches of trunk road in the UK.
Last week, the deaths of Paul Anderson and his granddaughter Samantha Jane Carr led to renewed calls for the A9 to be made a dual carriageway to improve safety.
Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser said there was a "compelling case" to upgrade the road.
