Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has claimed that his country is running more than 5,000 centrifuges for enriching uranium, suggesting an expansion of the Iranian nuclear programme.
State media quoted him as saying the world powers had agreed that Iran could have up to 6,000 centrifuges at the Natanz nuclear plant without it endangering ongoing nuclear talks. The International Atomic Energy Agency has so far confirmed that about 3,000 to 3,500 centrifuges were operational at the Natanz plant. The five United Nations veto powers plus Germany have continually called for a freeze on the Iranian atomic programme. Centrifuges are used for enriching uranium, which could be employed in nuclear weapons if more highly refined.
