Cuba is marking the 55th anniversary of the start of the communist revolution led by former president Fidel Castro.
The former president was not expected to attend the celebrations of the storming of the Moncada barracks in Santiago on 26 July 1953. Instead Cuban President Raul Castro gave a speech to 10,000 invited guests telling them Cuba will be prepared to defend itself militarily regardless of who is elected as US president in November.
