More than 350 illegal immigrants have landed in Italy just a day after the government extended a state of emergency.
Italy's Ansa news agency said two Nigerian children on one of the boats died during the crossing to the island of Lampedusa. Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said the number of illegal immigrants landing in the first half of the year had doubled to more than 10,000. The government of Silvio Berlusconi has threatened to deport the immigrants. The Vatican released a statement saying that even in a state of emergency, human rights must be respected.
