A strike over a pay hike demand by ground crew and cabin staff at Germany's Lufthansa airline is set to begin at midnight on Sunday. The walkout is expected to cause disruption at Frankfurt airport, the country's largest, and at Hamburg airport in northern Germany. On Friday, the Verdi union, which represents over 50,000 airline workers, voted overwhelmingly to walk off the job.
Verdi is demanding a 9.8 percent pay rise but Lufthansa, Europe's second biggest airline by passenger numbers, is offering 6.7 percent. Further strikes are planned at several key airports. German politicians have urged both sides to cooperate in reaching a deal and end the dispute quickly.
