In the Turkish city of Istanbul, two consecutive explosions in a residential area have killed 17 people and injured at least 150 others. The blasts took place within ten minutes of each other in what Istanbul's governor, Muammer Guler, described as a terrorist attack.
Turkey's NTV news reported that a second bomb exploded as people rushed to the scene of the first blast to help victims. The governor said the bombs were in rubbish bins and that it was not a suicide bombing. Turkish authorities suspect Kurdish militants were responsible for the explosions. A senior Kurdish separatist figure for the banned Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, has denied his group's involvement.
