The UN General Assembly has approved a South African judge as the body's new high commissioner.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon nominated Navanethem Pillay for her struggle against apartheid, and her judicial career. The 192-nation assembly approved her nomination, and Pillay will take over the post on August 1 for a four-year term. She will replace Louise Arbour, a former Canadian Supreme Court justice. Ban pledged full support and increased financial and human resources to back up the post.
