The White House says the United States' budget deficit is expected to climb to a record of nearly 490 billion dollars in 2009.
The administration says the deficit is being driven to an all-time high by the sagging economy and the stimulus payments being made to some 130 million households in an effort to avoid a deep recession in the United States. Congress passed a major economic stimulus package earlier this year and on Saturday approved a housing rescue bill that could see the government guarantee up to 400 billion dollars in home mortgages.
