Israeli Prime Minsiter Ehud Olmert has announced that he will not contest a leadership ballot within his party in September.
The move effectively spells the resignation of the Israeli leader, who has been dogged by calls to step down over a corruption investigation. Olmert maintains he is innocent of the fraud allegations, but has pledged to resign if indicted. Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, one of Olmert's key rivals, is expected to contest the Kadima party's internal vote on September 17.
