China has refused to retract its censorship of the Internet ahead of the Beijing Olympics despite widespread calls for unfettered web access by international media and rights groups.

The IOC's press chief Kevin Gosper says a recent assurance by IOC chief Jacques Rogge that there would be no censorship had been circumvented when some IOC officials held talks privately with local Chinese games organisers. At the Games media centre in Beijing, correspondents say China is selectively blocking access to Internet pages including entries from Deutsche Welle, the BBC and US broadcaster Radio Free Asia. Also inaccessable are Wikipedia entries describing the Tiananmen Square massace of 1989.
