a gang around Zdenek Dolezel, former head of two Social Democrat (CSSD) PMs' office, Ladislav Peta, former Mayor of Budisov, south Moravia, and ministry clerk Miloslav Rehulka allegedly bribed Jourova with two million crowns within the preparation of a fraudulent drawing of subsidies from the EU funds for a reconstruction of the chateau in Budisov. Peta, Dolezel and Rehulka will be tried in court. Jana Krecova, from the district state attorney's office in Prague, confirmed to Pravo that charges were last week brought against the three suspects on suspicion of blackmailing the crown witness in the case, Marek Ricar. Dolezel and Peta were originally accused of bribery as well. However, Dolezel was acquitted of this charge, and in the case of Peta it was re-qualified from direct to indirect bribery, says Pravo. Dolezel is also prosecuted in a separate case over unauthorised handling of personal data as former CSSD Interior Minister Frantisek Bublan's files were found in Dolezel's home. According to the police, Peta, Dolezel and Rehulka overpriced the reconstruction of the Budisov chateau by some 30 million crowns that they wanted to abuse. The state attorney's office has so far dealt only with the accusation of bribery and blackmailing of a witness. The police are still investigating the suspicion of fraud and manipulations with EU subsidies. Dolezel also figures in the case of alleged corruption accompanying the sale of the Unipetrol Czech petrochemical holding. Dolezel was suspected of demanding a 5-million-crown bribe from Polish lobbyist Jacek Spyra in 2005 in exchange for returning the Seta company, for which Spyra was lobbying, into the negotiations on the Unipetrol privatisation. A low-level court acquitted Dolezel of attempted fraud charges in February, but the Prague High Court in late June annulled the verdict and returned the case for reappraisal. ($1=15.343 crowns)
