01.08.2008 - IAEA clears the way for Indian nuclear trade

The United Nations' atomic watchdog has approved a plan to inspect India's nuclear facilities, clearing the way for the country to trade openly in nuclear technology.

by the International Atomic Energy Agency will allow UN monitors to visit 14 existing or planned reactors by 2014. This fulfils a key requirement of a deal between the United States and India that would give New Delhi access to atomic fuel and technology, despite its never having signed international non-proliferation agreements. Without the IAEA safeguards, India cannot import nuclear technology from the 45-nation group of nuclear suppliers that includes the United States. India is now expected to seek a waiver from that group.
