Nato 'needs more' in Afghanistan ... says four soldiers and one civilian have been killed in a roadside blast in Kunar, eastern Afghanistan.

In a separate attack, another soldier from Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) was killed in an explosion in Khost.

The nationality of the soldiers has not been released.

The blasts came as aid agencies said they may become unable to operate in parts of the country once seen as safe, because of the intensifying conflict.

"This is a very difficult time right now, and our sincere condolences and sympathies are with the family and friends of the brave soldiers and civilian who died," Isaf said in a statement. It gave no other details of the attack.

Isaf has around 53,000 troops in Afghanistan to help the government in its struggle against insurgents. It has lost nearly 140 soldiers in Afghanistan this year, according to a tally compiled by the AFP news agency.

A statement by 100 aid agencies pointed to a 50% increase in insurgent attacks compared to last year.

Kabul has blamed the rise in insurgent attacks on a truce between Pakistan's government and militants in tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.
