A senior US government scientist has reportedly committed suicide just as prosecutors were about to charge him with carrying out a series of attacks using the biological weapon anthrax in 2001.

The anthrax was sent by post to media organisations and politicians shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks. The anthrax-laced letters killed five people and caused illness in 17 others.
