At least nine people have been killed in the Gaza Strip in the deadliest fighting between the rival Fatah and Hamas factions since Hamas seized control of the coastal territory a year ago.
The fighting erupted when Hamas gunmen surrounded a suburb in Gaza City to arrest 11 people who the Islamist group believes were behind bombings last Friday. The attacks killed five Hamas gunmen and a young girl. Meanwhile the Israeli army says it has allowed 180 members of a clan loyal to Fatah to cross the border into Israel. The army said some were being treated in Israeli hospitals.
