03.08.2008 - Iran, Syria discuss nuclear programme

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has once again said his country will not retreat from what he called its "nuclear rights". He made the remarks on Saturday, after talks in Tehran with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Tehran's official response to an offer of new talks to resolve the dispute. According to the Iranian Government website, Assad said that every country, including Iran, has the right to engage in uranium enrichment and possess nuclear power stations. Last month, French President Nicolas Sarkozy urged Assad to persuade Iran to prove it was not working towards nuclear weapons.
