Tributes are being paid in Russia and abroad to Alexander Solzhenitsyn who died on Sunday aged 89.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the death of the Soviet-era dissident and Nobel prize laureate was a "heavy loss" for Russia. The writer of "The Gulag Archipelago" about the former Soviet prison camp system had been a "brave person", Putin added. Ex-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said Solzenitsyn had been among the first to break the silence last century about the "inhumane regime" of Joseph Stalin. Ukrainian President Viktor Yushenko described Solzhenitsyn as an "outstanding" writer who would be sadly missed in Ukraine. Solzhenitsyn died of heart failure at his home near Moscow.
