State media report that two separatist militants threw homemade explosive at a group of 70 police officers jogging near their barracks. The province's eight million largely Muslim Uighurs have been the focus of intense scrutiny in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics that open on Friday. The Chinese government has repeatedly said that it is threatened by terrorism in Xinjiang. Meanwhile the human rights commissioner of the German parliament, Guenther Nooke, is due to begin a four day fact-finding mission in Beijing, to get an impression of human rights in China on the eve of the Olympics.
