The number of years during which people must pay pension insurance will be raised from 25 to 35 years. Labour and Social Affairs Minister Petr Necas says people already now pay pension insurance for an average of 42 years. Unlike at present years spent while studying will not count to this period. This is the first stage of the government pension reform.
Further two stages will deal with private pension schemes and pension funds. The opposition criticises the changes and trade unions also were opposed to them. They staged demonstrations and a one-hour strike against them. The retirement age of 65 applies to men, childless women and mothers of one child. Mothers of two and more children will retire at the age of 62-64 depending on the number of children.
