Unarmed Russian soldiers sent to Abkhazia ... Ossetia claimed to have repulsed Georgian special forces who tried to cut off the regional capital from nearby villages. A Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman denied the reports, saying South Ossetian separatists had opened fire on two Georgian-controlled villages, and that Georgian forces had returned fire. The ministry also dismissed Russian claims that its jets had overflown rebel territory. Georgia accuses Moscow of seeking to annex the two regions and derail its efforts to join the NATO military alliance.
