Georgia's president has announced a full military mobilisation as Georgian troops move to regain control of the breakaway province of South Ossetia.
Mikhail Saakasvhili said that his government would be calling up reservists as fighting continues in South Ossetia's capital. Georgia has launched a major military offensive to regain control of Tskhinvali with both sides using fighter jets and rockets. Speaking in Beijing, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin criticised the Georgian offensive against the rebels, whom Moscow supports. He said this would only provoke retaliatory measures. The United Nations Security Council has held an emergency session to discuss the conflict. It has expressed concern over the fighting but failed to endorse a Russian-sponsored statement urging the two sides to cease hostilities.
