08.08.2008 - UN to debate S. Ossetia fighting

The UN Security Council is due shortly to hold another emergency session in New York on the heavy fighting in South Ossetia.

Russian tanks and troops entered Georgia's breakaway region on Friday after forces of Georgia's pro-Western government tried to capture Tskhinvali, South Ossetia's main city. Its residents include many Russian passport holders. The International Red Cross says the city's hospitals are overflowing with casualties. According to the news agency Interfax, Russia's military claims that 10 of its peacekeeping troops in Tskhinvali were killed by Georgian shelling. The government of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili claims to have shot down five Russian aircraft. That's been denied by Russia. George W. Bush. The US State Department says it's sending an envoy to the affected Caucausus region. NATO and the EU have called for an end to hostilities. The Finnish chairman of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Alexander Stubb, says he fears a "full-fledged war" over South Ossetia.
